Football: It’s more than just the Premiership

31 10 2007

Last night I hopped on the train from Lincoln to go and watch my beloved Nottingham Forest play host to Oldham Athletic. It wasn’t the best game I’ve ever seen and frankly I was pretty angry with my team for failing to record anything better than a 0-0 draw, and playing rather badly.

With me was my Newcastle United-supporting housemate Rich, who agreed to come along just because he wanted to go to a game. He told me before hand that he’d written on his blog about his upcoming experience of League One, but I hadn’t had time to read it.

So when I logged on to wordpress last night I had a look, and I must say I was slightly disappointed with his expectations for the game. Yes, a lot of clubs below Championship level do have Read the rest of this entry »

Lincoln…in the South?

26 10 2007

According to some ‘boffins’ at Sheffield University, Lincoln is a southern city, while Nottingham, just south of Lincoln, is a northern city.

Confusing isn’t it?

The academics have concluded that the divide between the North and South goes diagonally from Grimsby, through Coventry and down to Gloucester. So while Lincoln is in the South of England, Hereford, near South Wales is in the North.

I have a question. Aren’t we forgetting the Midlands? That’s where I’ve always thought Lincoln was.

Random Sunday Splurge.

21 10 2007

I’m not scared of spiders, it’s needles and pigeons that freak me out, but when one lands on your head while you’re in the shower it can be quite a frightful experience.

This is exactly what happened to me this afternoon. I’d seen the spider on the bathroom ceiling, but it was stationary and a few feet away from the shower. Then, just a few minutes later I felt a tap on the head and instinctively went to slap it. Luckily I didn’t squash it into my head, instead I knocked it onto the cubicle floor and was able to wash it down the plughole. It was a lucky escape.

Sporting stuff now, and Forest have stretched their unbeaten run to eight games, collecting a point for their goalless draw at home to Doncaster Rovers. It was a game that could have gone either way, and given that they’d done the double over us last season, I’m quite happy with a point.

We lost the rugby, although I couldn’t watch the game as I was sat behind a checkout not serving customers….because they were all out watching the game. It’s a shame but we got to the final and beat Australia and France on the way, so it’s not all bad.

Finally, I’m in a bit of trouble. On Friday evening, myself and some friends were all enjoying a jolly good chuckle and drinking wine. My housemate Danny asked me to pass him his laptop, and being a little tipsy I dropped it.

I was seated and it didn’t fall far, it even landed on a cushion. But the fact is it won’t work at all, and I feel very bad. The main problem here is that Danny hasn’t backed up any of his work, and neither of us can afford to get it repaired. Traffic wardens are on a crusade to bankrupt me, while HSBC got bored the other day so slapped me with a £25 bank charge for no apparent reason.

Listen Up Lincoln!

19 10 2007

That is the title of my Radio News production teams’ new show on 107.3 Siren FM.  The show goes out this afternoon at 5pm until 5.45, and is then followed by the excellent news & sport bulletin.

If you’re in the Greater Lincoln area then please tune in and let us know what you think.  If you live elsewhere and you have a machine with the World Wide Intra-Hyper-Cyber-Web-Net, drop everything you are doing and go to the Siren website where you can listen online.

In other news, this ‘ere blog has a fantastic new celebrity (sort of) fan!  She is BBC Journalist and style icon Deborah Wilson, and she is kindly going to pay me £5 million just for mentioning her name on here!

A Very Important Announcement.

17 10 2007

O.k, this news may be a bit old, but it has never crossed my path and therefore shall be treated as a ‘breaking’ story.

Bill Bailey – comedian, actor, musician, troll, genius – has put his name forward as a possible UK entry in the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest, thanks to several online petitions set up by fans. He will even allow fans to vote for their chosen song.

What a Rubbish Brand!

15 10 2007

Whilst browsing my emails I checked to see what was in my junk mail folder, and found a message from ticketzone.co.uk.  It said that Russell Brand had added new shows to his stand-up ‘comedy’ tour.

Good to see the Hotmail filters in good working order.

What a day!

13 10 2007

A fantastic day for sport today, I’m very proud to be English.  A 3-0 win in the football and a brilliant 14-9 victory over the French in the Rugby World Cup, taking us into our second consecutive final.

As well as that, the mighty Forest won again to take them within a point of topping League One. Ace.

Food=good. Fines=bad.

12 10 2007

There’s some kind of crazy market thing happening in Lincoln near WH Smiths, I don’t know what it’s for but it smells good. They’ve got a bunch of stalls selling lots of foreign food and I think I’m close to giving in to temptation and heading back to town. I’ll probably wait for Rich to get back from court though. He’s court reporting by the way, he may be an idiot but he’s not a criminal.

Speaking of crime, I stepped outside this morning to find that I’d been given a ticket for parking outside my own house. It’s much the same as the one Danny received a couple of weeks ago for parking in front of our driveway. It can be quite annoying living in a city where the council are so anti-car that they’ve also decided to pedestrianise my route to work.

Finally!

12 10 2007

My work experience placement with BBC Radio Lincolnshire looks like it’s finally going to start after months of confusion. Adam the engineer guy has cobbled together a phone handset with a loop system that plugs into the switchboard.

I went up to the BBC this morning at 6.45 (having worked at Tesco until midnight!) and tested out my new bit of kit to see if everything was running smoothly. After a couple of quick chats to a depressed grandfather and an angry farmer, it was clear that it did the job. I can now do my first proper shift next Thursday, having signed my contract way back in May. Read the rest of this entry »

Another scoop from our favourite Red Top….

10 10 2007

Kelly BrookWhilst browsing the glorious website of The Sun I managed to find a story about bras. This appeared in the news section under the ever-so-classy headline “Play with Kelly Brook’s boobs”. Obviously I clicked.

Apparently, 80 per cent of British women are wearing the wrong size bra. Underneath the article is a game where readers can guess the bra size of various celebrities.

A fine example of how good Journalism can change the World.
