Yesterday was the first day back at university for my fellow coursemates and I, in our final semester before graduation, yet many people in the two lectures we had proved that they have a lot of growing up to do between now and getting a job.
I’m talking about a complete lack of manners that some people display, mainly failing to shut the hell up and allow the lecturer to begin. It’s something that’s wound me up throughout my degree, when you sit down in the lecture theatre and all you can hear is a hundred-or-so people chatting amongst themselves while the lecturer desperately attempts to achieve some order so that he or she can tell us some important things that we need to know.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not claiming that I am the perfect student. Sometimes I can’t help but nod off in a lecture, and sometimes if I feel that I might nod off, I don’t go at all. I always feel bad, but being a student can be tiring and I can always chase up any vitally important information that I’ve missed.
While it may be a bit naughty of me to miss the odd lecture, I have never through utter ignorance or rudeness, prevented a lecturer from doing their job and making them stand at the front of a lecture theatre looking stupid and helpless. I was brought up to be quiet and listen when someone in a position of authority is talking, and to do my yapping in my own time.
Spot on mate. At times I felt myself heckling rorange a bit today, but that’s generally down to incompetence on his part when it came to using that bloody DVD player.
It is frustrating. It’s even worse when it’s a guest lecturer…. which I’ve seen happen many a time. Infuriating.
Hear, hear. I don’t have too many large lecture classes currently, but I have had to deal with people who just won’t shut up and let class begin. It boggles my mind that people would be so rude. If they’re going to ignore the teacher and have their own conversations, the least they could do is put those laptops to good use…
I nearly stood up and lectured everyone else about that on Monday, I can’t believe people’s lack of respect. The thing that gets me is one person i was talking to was being really ignorent about ‘The business of Journalism’ saying “What the hell do i need to know that for”, only to complain about not understanding the assesment, and if they really knew how much people like Richard Keeble know i’m sure they wouldn’t be so rude then.
At the end of the day the problem is we’re preaching to the converted because the people who read this blog and blogs like this are those people who have some respect and do more than go to the odd lecture for the sake of it.
Rant over!
